Located in traffic circle that is in the center of a new re-development area in Tallahassee adjacent to the Florida State University stadium is the sculpture that serves as the identity for the district. The sculpture is composed of dichroic glass elements suspended on stainless steel cables that are secured to a circular stainless steel ring that is supported with stainless steel tubes. Sitting in the
Located in the center of a roundabout adjacent to the Florida State University stadium, the sculpture was composed to both relate to the football stadium as well as to the traffic navigating the circular intersection. The sculpture’s circular form tapers from the top to the bottom so that the drivers navigating the intersection would have clear visibility of traffic entering and departing the roundabout. This tapered form also represented the traditional opening of each home football game when a Seminole Indian rides to the center of the field with a flaming spear that he spikes into the ground, symbolically declaring this to be FSU territory.
The center of the ‘spear’ form is composed of dichroic triangles, suspended on stainless steel cables radiating from the central stainless steel ‘spine’. Atop this central ‘spine’ is a high powered search light which casts a light beam more than 50,000’ into the sky, representing the shaft of the spear, recognizable from miles away and further ‘declaring’ this to be FSU territory.
The dichroic triangles visually overlap and shift colors as drivers circumnavigate the roundabout creating a visual dynamic experience that can be appreciated with peripheral vision so as to not to distract from their driving.
