Orlando Federal Courthouse
The central atrium of the Orlando Federal Courthouse features monumental glass windows developed from paintings by the renowned artist Al Held. The largest of these windows measures 20 feet wide by 50 feet tall, filling the space with vibrant jewel-toned light. Six additional windows on the ground floor, each measuring 5 by 11 feet, were also based on Held’s work.
All windows were created using a specialized inlaid lamination process that combines water jet cutting with liquid resin lamination to sheets of tempered glass. This method allowed for exacting precision in translating Held’s compositions. Kenneth von Roenn collaborated closely with the artist on the design. After Held’s passing, the fabrication continued under the guidance of his daughter, Mara Held, and long-time assistant Gene Benson. This project stands as a powerful example of architectural glass art inspired by fine art and executed with innovative glass techniques.
