As part of a vision to crown the Charlotte skyline with a dramatic architectural statement, von Roenn was commissioned to design a sculptural glass feature for the top of the Wells Fargo building. The resulting design includes 52 glass fins extending 50 feet above the building and 35 feet down its facade.
Each fin is crafted from tempered laminated glass embedded with holographic diffraction grating film and dichroic glass, transforming sunlight into shifting patterns of color. At night, lighting adds a kaleidoscopic effect. The structure was engineered by Tim MacFarlane to endure hurricane-force winds and weighs over 550,000 pounds. This monumental installation is recognized as the world’s largest architectural glass sculpture, a landmark atop the Queen City’s skyline.
